Other dive spot and island attraction near Lombok and the Gili Islands, is Labuan Bajo which is located at the far west coast of the West Manggarai regency for Flores. This is the largest regency and a home to many spectacular sights and adventure possibilities. It is important to remember that it is this particular regency that suffers more severely than the rest of Flores from the extended dry season period. Komodo National Park encompasses a lot of water and islands west of Labuanbajo. If you decided to go to Rinca or Komodo islands, or dive in the park you will have to buy a 3 day park pass for about US$15.
Rinca Island (Rinca Kecil or Pulau Rinca) is a more convenient place to see Komodo Dragons than in Komodo island. Some dive operators might be convinced to combine a stop at the island with a day diving. There are big dragons that are often right in front of the pier when people arrive.
Scuba Diving within the park is also excellent, probably one of the best in the world. It has more biodiversity than anywhere else in the world. There are three main dive operators that offer day dives as well as live aboard opportunities: Bajo Dive Club, Dive Komodo, and Reef Seekers.
Seraya Island is an idyllic island and a great opportunity to get away from civilization and do some snorkeling and diving. The island’s cove is protected from the sea providing calm and clear water for snorkeling. At low tide the coral is exposed and local fishermen walk on the reef in search of prey. Rowboats can be rented and taken to nearby islands for snorkeling and diving. Make sure to run up to the top of the hill behind the resorts and check out the sunset. The lodges on the island do have showers, but running water is only available a few hours a day.
There is also Pulau Kalong. Bat Island that is a small island with huge hill and planted by the mangrove forest located in Komodo National Park. This island is consisted of small land and planted by mangrove trees surround the island and became a good habitat for bat animals. There are thousands of fruit bats inhabiting this mangrove forest. That is why this island is called Bat Island and the local people mention it by Pulau Kalong. It features the beautiful panorama and amazing moment when thousand of bats come out from their nest to locate the fruits at other island around Pulau Kalong. The boat ride from/to Labuan bajo will take about one hour. You should consider taking a trip to the market early in the morning to purchase local coffee, or just to look over some local goods.
