Lombok has more crafts than art if you compare it to Bali. Lombok crafts are practical items made for everyday use, using traditional techniques and natural local materials. Each village specializes in certain crafts, hand weaving in one village, basket ware, and pottery in another village.
Lombok's Pottery is international renowned for its reputation in workmanship’s quality. There are three villages which produces pottery. They are Penujak, Banyumulek and Masbagik, all located within one hour's drive from Mataram. These villages are the place if you want to see mud being molded into a beautiful vase, plates being crafted just like they have been made for centuries. All of this done by women, the pottery is all shaped by hand without the aid of a potter's wheel.
Lombok is also known for its traditional hand weaving. There are two main villages which produce traditional hand weaving village in Lombok. They are Sukarara in Central Lombok, and Pringgasela in the east. Handweavings like sarong and songket are produced here. The sarong is not only a comfortable to wear but can also serve as a sheet, and other uses. Songket, is one of the most complicated hand weaving that usually done by women from generation to generation. The process can take over a month to reach one piece of songket. Some expensive songket combines silver or gold strings to give a touch of natural and shiny motif. Other kind of hand weaving is called Tenun Ikat or also called Ikat Weaving, which usually done by men.
The exotic carvings are also popular such as wooden masks or other primitive carvings. Two main villages in Lombok which produce those items are Labuapi and Rungkang Jangkuk Village. Many of Lombok carvings and masks can be found in some art galleries in Bali's Legian Street, or Ubud. They are well marketed in Bali, and often claim as original Bali's art.
You can even find rattans crafts and furniture in Lombok. It is being made using traditional way by the locals that make it unique. And the crafts are smoother.
