Lombok is renowned for its traditional weaving. The traditional weaving technique is handed from mother to daughter for generations. There are two main villages which produce traditional hand weaving village in Lombok. They are Sukarara in Central Lombok, and Pringgasela in the east. And Panji Sari Village in Sukarara is well known for its traditional weavings. Hand weavings like sarong and songket are produced here. Songket, is one of the most complicated hand weaving that usually done by women from generation to generation. The process can take over a month to reach one piece of songket. Some expensive songket combines silver or gold strings to give a touch of natural and shiny motif. Definition of Songket is a fabric that belongs to the brocade family of textiles. It is a hand woven in silk or cotton, and patterned with gold or silver threads. The metallic threads stand out against the background cloth to create a shimmering effect. In the weaving process the metallic threads are inserted in between the silk or cotton threads.

The term songket comes from the Malay word menyongket, 'to embroider with gold or silver threads'. Songket is a luxury product traditionally worn during ceremonial occasions as sarong, shoulder cloths or head ties. Other kind of hand weaving is called Tenun Ikat or also called Ikat Weaving, which usually done by men.
